Kent merkezindeki hayatın tüketiliyor olması, yaşanan krizler, parlayan gayrimenkul piyasası ve nihai bir meta olan toprağın yeniden keşfi kentin etrafını arka bahçe işlevinden çıkararak fethedilecek topraklara çevirmiş durumda. Su havzalarından geçen otoyollar, ormanlık alanları kemiren siteler, ardı ardına açılan alışveriş merkezleriyle oluşan yerleşim alanları yeni topografyayı oluşturuyor. Bu durum ortaya sınırları belli olmayan, çevresindekileri yutan ve sonuç olarak hiç bitmeyen bir şantiyeyi andıran kent manzarası sunuyor. Kent ve ütopya kavramlarının iç içe olduğundan bahsedilir; kentleri planlamak bir anlamda buralardaki hayatın nasıl yaşanacağını planlamak anlamına gelir. The consumption of life itself in the city center, rampant crises, the booming of real estate markets and the rediscovery of land as the ultimate commodity have turned the surroundings of the city, which once functioned as backyards, into yet more land to be conquered. Settlements comprised of highways built over catchment basins, residential complexes gnawing away at forestlands, and copious shopping malls define the new topography. The result is an amorphous urban landscape which insatiably devours its own surroundings, and thus resembles a neverending construction site. It is said that the concept of the city is intrinsically utopian; urban planning, in a way, means planning how life is to be lived in these places. But what I see are more like images from a dystopia…
